October PTO Minutes

Dinwiddie Elementary School
PTO Meeting
October 17, 2019

  • Welcome – Mrs. Chaplin, PTO president, welcomed everyone and provided the following updates on fall activities.
    • Spirit Wear was very successful. There are a few extra shirts available. If possible, orders will be taken again in the future.
    • The fall fundraiser has closed out and orders are currently being processed. Updated information on sales and delivery dates will be provided at the November PTO meeting. It is anticipated that orders will be received before the Thanksgiving break.
    • The Penny Wars contest has been going well and students are excited. The contest will continue through the end of October. So far, $400.00 has been collected and 100% of the proceeds will go back to the school.
    • Plans are underway for the Harvest Festival which will take place on November 16th. To date, 22 vendors have been confirmed, however, there will not be a mini-farm/petting zoo due to liability concerns.
  • Treasurer’s Report
    • A full update will be provided once all fall activities have been completed.
  • New Business
    • A discussion was held on possible future events. These events included:
      • Christmas Movie Night – the PTO may sponsor a movie night in December; will ask for feedback to gauge interest as well as a choice of movie.
      • Talent Show – Mrs. Chaplin stated that the PTO would be taking the lead on organizing a talent show, however, the PTO would help support the event. Concerns were shared about various copyright concerns and associated costs if using licensed music. It was also expressed that a talent show might not be a good idea at this time for elementary school students due to bullying concerns.
      • Jump Rope – This would be an after school program, and the school will survey interest in starting a jump rope club. Mr. Roberts stated that a certain number of participants will be needed to make the initiative cost-efficient. The PTO will be able to provide some support. Mr. Roberts also commented that a jump rope club is good for physical fitness, but also promotes self-esteem and builds social skills.
    • The next meeting will be held on November 14th. This is also Parent/Teacher conference night and all parents and guardians are welcomed and encouraged to join DES PTO.
    • The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 pm.
